How
to download and install software from the internet!
Rather
than give you a rather large and boring description of
what the download process is, we're going to define a
few simple steps on how to download software from the
internet correctly THE FIRST TIME so you don't waste
your time!
Step
1) Create a folder called "My Zips"
on your hard drive using Windows Explorer. This folder
will be used to store all of the .ZIP files that you
download. This way they are all in one location on your
system.
Step
2) Download a utility so you can UNZIP the .zip
files that you download. We suggest the very easy to use
1-Step-UnZip. This is the easiest thing out there to
unzip and install software distributed in .ZIP format.
We have searched the internet for an easy to use program
to help you unzip and more importantly auto-install
the screen saver downloads from this site. We have found
2 programs that do the job very nicely and come highly
recommended. Both of these links are self extracting
files. You will need to run the .EXE after it is
downloaded. It will then install itself onto your
computer.
Step
3) Now that you have a program to access those
.ZIP files with, you need to download a program onto
your computer. When you click on a file to download,
most browsers (IE, Netscape, AOL) will ask you if you
want to OPEN it or SAVE it to disk. You should always
SAVE it to disk! That's what your "My Zips"
folder you made earlier will be used for. So after you
click on the file to download it you should be able to
select WHERE to save the file to. Select the "My
Zips" folder and start the download process.
Step
4) Let the download process begin! Sit back,
relax, continue surfing around or go make a sandwich or
something while the downloading takes place. Sometimes
it can take a VERY LONG time for a file to get
downloaded onto your computer. This is NORMAL! Do NOT
stop the download process. Once the download process is
complete you should see a box notifying you the download
is done.
Note:
Just because you have downloaded a file does not mean it
is INSTALLED on your system. You have to extract the
files inside the .ZIP file and then run the SETUP.EXE
file inside the .ZIP!
Step
5) Now that you have successfully downloaded
your file, it's time to unzip the file and run the
SETUP.EXE file inside the .ZIP file! It's beyond the
scope of this page to tell you what to do next, but the
general idea is to tell the .ZIP utility to
AUTOMATICALLY INSTALL the software inside the .ZIP file.
This is easy if the .ZIP file contains a SETUP.EXE
program to run.
Recap!
First, get
a program to help you access the .ZIP files!!
Make a folder called "My Zips" on your hard
drive.
Download your .ZIP files into this folder.
Run your UNZIP utility and select the file you just
downloaded.
Next have your UNZIP utilty extract and automatically
install the software!
After you
have installed the software you may want to remove the
.ZIP file from your "My Zips" folder. Or you
can just leave it there incase you need to access it
again in the future.
